Frequently asked questions

What is Stop and Know?

Stop and Know is a grassroots initiative to foster collaboration and awareness between law enforcement/first responders and the ever-growing population of individuals who have special needs, mental health diagnoses, or other conditions that affect communication and behavior by providing specialized ID products that help minimize communication gaps.

How is the KnowID used?

The KnowID wallet card, easily fits in standard wallet slots and windows and is designed to be carried with a person's photo ID (driver license/non-driver ID) to be presented to law enforcement and other first responders as needed.

It can also be worn on clothing via lanyard or clip by children, elderly, or other individuals who may be at risk of becoming lost, providing an immediate way for a passerby to help them.

What is the KnowID card and how does it work?

The KnowID a simple, wallet-sized card that alerts the reader to the card holder's unique circumstances, (for example "I am autistic" or "I have dementia") followed by a short and to the point customized list of unique behaviors the individual may exhibit when in a stressful situation.

The back side of the card contains a QR code that, when scanned by any smartphone, provides instant access to that person's emergency contact information, and optionally, current medications and other important information.

Who is the KnowID card for?

The KnowID is for any person who may have difficulty communicating or advocating for themselves when in a stressful situation such as an encounter with police, a medical emergency, or if they become lost.

Should I be concerned about privacy by using KnowID products?

All of the information available in using any KnowID product is voluntarily provided by the individual or by their caregiver/guardian/authorized representative on their behalf.

You are not required to disclose anything you do not wish to.

There are several visible aspects on KnowID products:

Alert Statement. (card) This is the "I am/I have" statement printed on both sides of the card. It can be general, such as "I am a special needs person." or "I have a mental health condition" or specific such as, "I am autistic." or "I have schizophrenia."

Behavior Statements. (card) This is a list of up to 9 short sentences that tell the reader behaviors they might expect, such as "I may not respond when you speak to me." or "Loud noise upsets me." They are fully customizable, which means you can choose what they say. You may also skip them completely, but we do not recommend this as they are helpful for the reader to know.

QR Code. (all products) This is the area of the card that when scanned by the camera on a smartphone, displays emergency contact information and the option to include medication and allergy information.

The emergency contact displays only the first name, relationship (i.e. mother, spouse), and phone number so that the police or another person can reach them in an emergency. No last names or addresses are shown.

Medication and allergy information are optional and you are not required to include them.

It is also important to note that the name of the individual to whom the KnowID card belongs appears no where on the card or in the QR code. If the card is lost, no one who finds it would be able to identify who it belongs to.

Can predators use the information obtained from the KnowID products?

It would be very difficult.

When the KnowID card is carried in a wallet/purse, it would need to be handed to another person for them to access any of its information.

When the KnowID card is worn on clothing, a person would need to be within inches of the wearer in order to scan it and would need to physically turn it over to read any of the additional printed information.

To access the QR code on our other products, again, a person would need to be within inches of the user or their belongings.

Most people vulnerable in this situation are low functioning and unlikely to be in public without a caregiver or aide. If they are found alone, they are likely lost and need help. You would want a passerby to find them and utilize the card or QR codes to help them.

The chance of your loved one being helped in an emergency by having this information available far outweighs the very low likelihood of it falling into the wrong hands.

And remember, neither your loved one's name or address appears on the card or in the QR code. So even if a lost item is found and scanned, only a first name and phone number of an emergency contact is shown. Most people are good people and will use this information to return it to its owner.

Yes! Tokens can be sold without wristbands. Click here.

Please note wristbands are not sold without tokens. If you need a new wristband or want extras, they will automatically come with a token.

Will the QR code be the same if I have multiple products?

Most of the time.

Any products purchased at the same time will always have the same QR code across all items.

Items purchased later after an initial purchase (i.e. you already have a card and are now purchasing a wristband) will have the same QR code as the initial purchase as long as we are able to locate your original order. This is why we note to tag all orders for the same person with the same tag name and same email every time you place an order.

It's not the end of the world if a subsequent item is assigned a different QR code, but it will cause extra work on the customer's part to identify which is which if they request a later update to the QR and could cause one QR to be updated and not other unless you request both.

Don't worry, we're always here to help figure it out! But tagging each order with same name and the same email will ensure the QR is uniform across all your KnowID products.
